Description

From the nativity to the resurrection, from the healings on the road to the teachings at the well, the lives of women shine prominently in the Gospel. In Wisdom's Daughters, Elizabeth Watson tells the life of Jesus through the real and imagined accounts of Mary Magdalene, Elizabeth, Martha, Mary the Mother, and ten others, shedding new light on the Gospel stories, affirming the undeniable presence of women in the early community of disciples--and painting a breathtaking image of the relationship between Jesus and women. Each chapter includes Scripture references, commentary on the biblical scholarship, and questions for personal reflection or group dialogue.

One does not need to be a Christian to appreciate this book. Elizabeth Watson was a teacher beloved by the world-wide Quaker community. Her stories about the women in the life of Jesus, based on the skeletal facts that were retained about them in the bible as it has been handed down to us, are full of imaginative, historically relevant, and archaeologically accurate detail. She brings the inner and outer lives of these women to life: 1) Elizabeth; 2) Joanna; 3) the woman at the well; 4) Simon Peter's mother-in-law; 5) the woman with a hemorrhage; 6) the Syrophoenician woman; 7) the mother of the sons of Zebedee; 8) the bent-over woman; 9) Martha; 10) the woman who anointed Jesus; 11) Mary Magdalene; 12) Mary the wife of Clopas; 13) Mary of Bethany; and 14) Mary the Mother. Elizabeth Watson begins each story (which is given its own chapter) with the pertinent citations from the gospels, and also includes brief comments after each story that explains some of the context of the story, why she chose the imaginative additions that she did, and any pertinent gospel scholarship. Questions for reflection are included at the end of each chapter. Some general questions I prefer for using this book in a group study include: 1) What new understanding did I come away with after reading this chapter? 2) Is it true to my own experience? 3) What implications for my daily living do I take away from it? 4) What problems do I have with it? I hope women and men will read the book, study it, and consider its implications for their own lives.
